Review for Blue Ocean Bob by Brooks Olbrys

Join Blue Ocean Bob on his journey to protect all life in the Sea of Kerchoo

Blue Ocean Bob loves the sea and wants to dedicate his life to protecting it. He begins a new job as assistant to Mary Marine, the Island of Roses's leading marine biologist, and with his hummingbird guardian, Xena, by his side, works hard to carry out his duties to the sea creatures both on and off the shore.

When the challenges mount, Bob seeks advice from Doc the turtle, Earl the clam, and Wallace the walrus, who each help him to develop the positive attitude he needs to succeed.

The Adventures of Blue Ocean Bob: A Challenging Job is the second installment in this colorful and inspiring early chapter book series that provides young readers with an introduction to timeless principles of achievement.

About the Author

A graduate of Stanford University, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, and the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, Brooks Olbrys is the founder of Children's Success Unlimited and a managing director at investment bank Ion Partners. He lives with his wife and son in New York City.

From a young age, Kevin Keele has enjoyed creating artwork in many forms: drawing, oil painting, digital painting, even stained glass. His work has been featured in numerous picture books, magazines, board games, and video games. Though he lives far from any coastline, he has always been fascinated by the ocean and enjoys illustrating its various creatures. Kevin is currently an artist for Disney Interactive Studios. He lives in Utah with his wife and two sons. They are the caretakers of one cat, three chickens, and thousands of Italian honeybees.

Review:
This chapter picture book contains 5 different chapters. The first is Helping Hand where Bob must help a seal learn to feed in the deep. When he succeeds in his goal the short chapter is over and it flows into the next day where Bob must now help a pelican stuck in a net. In the third chapter Bob must warn the sea life that a storm is coming to the island. Chapter 4 is a Simple Reminder of why Bob wanted to become a marine assistant when he has a bad day and nothing goes right. Chapter 5 is Diving Deep, Bob must help a stingray thats stuck deep in the ocean.

The story is written in rhyme and runs smoothly throughout the story.  Each chapter teaches a good lesson to the reader. The reader learns about confidence, responsibility, communication, gratitude, and success. The illustrations by Kevin Keele are amazing. He does a fabulous job that will immediately engage the reader. His illustrations are realistic, colorful, and true. Readers will feel like they are apart of the story along with the characters.

The characters are from the original book in the series. They carry over into book 2 to help Bob along with his journey. The characters are supportive and encouraging, except for one. Xena is Bob's guardian, and though guardians are meant to keep us safe and and be our reasoning, Xena is constantly negative. She is everyone's subconscious, the thing that holds us back from doing what we really want by showing us the reality, the dangers, and the difficulty of our dreams. Bob has to not only overcome his fears and doubts but overcome Xena's negativity. She tarnishes the lessons being learned. The stories are embedded with her negativity and existence so it would be hard for the author to leave her out as a character without rewriting the whole story, though she is really not needed. Bob has much to deal while solving the problems at hand, discovering what his true destiny and purpose is.

The great things about this story is that it teaches life lessons. Bob learns to overcome his fears while helping other animals overcome theirs. He listens to the wise animals and to Miss Marine and helps the animals on the island live happily. He follows his dreams. Overall, children who love animals and the ocean are going to love this 50 page picture book.

Interview with Meaghan Fisher for I Love Ladybugs

Come and join me as I talk with author and publisher Meaghan Fisher for her new picture book I Love Ladybugs!  on Stories From Unknown Authors http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors @ 1pm EST.

Summary:
Ladybugs, ladybugs, all around. Follow along with toddler Emma Rose as she finds ladybugs in her garden, in her house, and on her toys…to her delight! Inspired by the author’s real-life daughter.

Review:

This story is delightfully simple with colorful and well drawn illustrations that will capture the reader’s attention. Ladybugs, with their red and black colors, and ability to show up everywhere, are quite fascinating to watch. Mrs. Fisher brings these insects to life, and draws out the youthful excitement they can bring just by following them around. Young children will love Emma Rose's adventure in search of ladybugs and will read it over and over again.

Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

Summary
We are working with Susan G. Komen in a Rally for the Cure Tennis Event for breast cancer awareness. Having many people in our lives being impacted by having breast cancer or just having cancer in general, our tennis club, Genesee Valley Sports Center, wish to help the people in our community in any way we can. In the community of Flint, which still hasn't quite recovered from the down turn in the economy, our goal is to help the many women out there who need to prevent this disease, or to catch it in time by getting a breast exam in a timely fashion. We hope to make a big impact.

What We Need

We would love to raise several thousand dollars for this event to donate to our local Susan G Komen chapter. But even if we do not reach our goal whatever money we have raised will still go to our local chapter. On October 27th at Genesee Valley Sports Center we will be having a rally event where we will conduct a day full of activities for our members/nonmembers and anyone who wishes to participate in the community. Our round robin tournament will be our biggest event along with the silent auction. Any money raised from these events will go right to Rally for the Cure and Susan G. Komen for breast cancer awareness.

Because we have an award-winning children's author on staff, Renee Hand, she will personally donate an author visit to any school in the United States who donates more than $300. She will be at the school all day talking and signing copies of her many books. She will contact the school personally and set up the visit.

The tennis pros on staff will also be donating private one hour lessons. We will be having things like beat the pro to win prizes. Clinics for all ages, seniors, adults, as well as for children. Tennis stroke analysis and much more. We have some great sponsors who have donated some wonderful silent auction items. The donation fee to be in the days events is $25. All money goes to Rally for the Cure and Susan G. Komen.

Anyone can also donate silent auction items if they do not have the funds. Whatever donation we receive is greatly appreciated in any form. The items must be received before the day of the event. Anyone can email questions to cdrahand@yahoo.com.

Other Ways You Can Help

Even if you can't donate anything, you can still help. Maybe you are a blogger or love to facebook. Please share with the world what we are doing. Make some noise and see if we can't help such a worthy cause as this.

If you can't make the event please donate funds through the above link. Any amount would be appreciated.

Book Review for The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen/Maja Dusikova

The Princess and the Pea

  • Hardcover: 24 pages
  • Publisher: Floris Books (March 1, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0863158579
  • ISBN-13: 978-0863158575

  • Summary:
The prince is looking for a true princess to be his wife, but all the girls he meets are too rude, too vain or too greedy. One stormy night a young lady knocks on the palace door claiming to be a princess, so the queen decides to put her to the test. Will she feel the pea underneath the huge pile of mattresses? This classic fairy tale is wonderfully brought to life with soft, colourful illustrations by popular illustrator Maja Dusikova.

    Author Bio:

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author and writer of children's fairy tales, such as The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina and The Ugly Duckling, which have become much-loved classics around the world. Maja Dusikova was born in Slovakia in 1946. She has illustrated over forty books for children. She lives with her family in Florence, Italy.

    Review:

The Princess and the Pea is a timeless classic fairy tale that has been done over and over again. Though this version is similar to the rest, it's the delightful illustrations that set this book apart. Illustrator Maja Dusikova has created a realistic feel to the story which is hard to duplicate. The illustrations are soft and charming, keeping up with the time period of castles and the unique characters you would find in them. The detail makes the reader feel as if they were apart of the story, wondering if the princess who arrived is really who she says she is. Though the pea tells the truth, in order for her to feel it, it must be made of steel. A wonderful book fit for readers young and old.

Interview for Rubber Shoes by Gladys Barbieri

Rubber Shoes: A Lesson in Gratitude / Los zapatos de goma: una lección de gratitud

Come and join me as I talk with author Gladys Barbieri  on Stories From Unknown Authors about her book Rubber Shoes, A Lesson In Gratitude on http://blogtalkradio.com/storiesfromunknownauthors @ 1 pm EST today.

Rubber Shoes by Gladys Elizabeth Barbieri

         Hardcover: 32 pages

  • Publisher: Castlebridge Books; Bilingual edition (October 1, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1601310781
  • ISBN-13: 978-1601310781

    Summary:

Gladys Elizabeth is very disappointed with the new shoes her mother picks out for her. After trying unsuccessfully to rid herself of the shoes, she is taught a lesson in gratitude that changes her feelings about them. This is a bilingual English-Spanish story.

     Bio:

Gladys Elizabeth Barbieri is a first grade teacher at Felton Elementary School in the Lennox School District. She received her B.A. in Communications from the University of San Francisco and her M.A. in Elementary Education from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Being that her parents immigrated to the US, her father from Nicaragua and her mother from El Salvador, Gladys understands the balancing act a child learns in becoming bicultural and bilingual, as well as how crucial literacy is in the development of an individual's success. Gladys is passionate about literacy and hopes to one day open literacy clinics for underrepresented students.

    Review:

Rubber Shoes is a story about gratitude in younger children. As parents we know very well the wants our children have. But how do we teach them to be thankful for the things they do have? This book is a start in that direction. Gladys is a child who wants a new pair of ballerina shoes. Her mom, being practical, decides on a pair of brown shoes that are on sale. Feeling that the shoes are the ugliest shoes ever, Gladys decides to rid herself of them. The problem is they are indestructible. But one day she grows out of them. Happy that she can finally get a pair of shoes that SHE wants, she is surprised when her mother takes a detour away from the shoe store taking her old shoes and giving them to a girl who absolutely loves and appreciates them way more than she ever did. A girl who cannot afford shoes. Will the act of her mothers kindness towards others change Gladys' attitude?

This story relays a very good message children of all ages will understand. Be thankful for what you have because there are children out there less fortunate who have nothing at all. If a child puts themselves in their shoes for awhile, they might begin to understand how lucky they are, and how thankful they should be about the things they have, not just toys or clothing, but the people that are in their lives that love them everyday. Children take many things for granted because in their little eyes, life revolves around them. They don't think about how their actions affect anyone else. This book is a way to teach children to look at the the bigger picture of things and to think of others needs and not just their own all the time. It also teaches children to be practical in their decision making.

    Reviewer: Renee Hand
Neiko’s Five Land Adventure is an interesting fantasy about strength, courage and the will to always fight for what you believe in.
Amanda Katherine Hawk is no ordinary teenager. In fact, there is nothing ordinary about her at all. She lives a double life that no one suspects. To her friends at school and even to her parents, she is just a high school senior ready to get out and go to college, playing in the band, hanging out with friends and going to church. However, the other life she leads is in no way that simple.
She is Captain Neiko Kidd, the commanding officer of the Desert Storm Falcons, an organization of woodland warriors. She is friends with most of the other Indian tribes who were on the same side. There biggest enemy was with the Crackedskulls, a band of bloodthirsty savages ruled by Raven and his son, Bloodhawk, who are half bird. What makes things worse is Bloodhawk’s obsession to have Neiko as his wife. Many attempts had been made to capture her, but each one failed. Neiko is a target that is hard to defeat.
Becoming more powerful within the Desert Storm Falcons, being promoted to Admiral, Neiko was becoming almost invincible. But Raven finds a mole in the tight knit group who would gladly betray her so Raven and Bloodhawk could defeat the seven tribes and rule everything.
But to find Neiko’s weakness was going to be tough, but then it was remembered that Neiko still liked to play with toys—plastic toy Egyptian pharaohs, to be more precise. She had created her own world with her toy soldiers. Being well versed in dark magic, Raven put a spell on Neiko’s favorite toy, Ramses. But just like all magic, it can backfire. It does when several of Neiko’s toys grow and become real, kidnapping her and taking her into her own imaginary world with their own take over agenda. What will happen to Neiko during her travels in finding salvation?

This story has many different twists and turns that will capture the reader’s attention. Children who love reading fantasy will love the adventure and the world A.K. Taylor creates using powerful Egyptian Pharoahs, half bird creatures, and battles.  What is most interesting is how she created a world for an ordinary teenager with Indian background to fight in, learn from, and come into her own.

    Review:

Smarty Pig, is a very cute story about hardwork and determination. Smarty's pigs family was teasing her about studying so hard for her classes, but when she comes home with A's on her report card and they don't, they realize they need help. They admit to not understanding their school work. This inspires Smarty Pig to help them by making learning fun. Some subjects are hard to understand but when they are made into a game, everyone seems to understand the lesson better. Instead of becoming angry at the pigs for teasing her, she finds the goodness in herself to help them. As she does this, all the pigs benefit from her wisdom and dedication.

Children will love this 30 page picture book. The colorful illustrations and rhyme will capture children's attention while at the same time encouraging children to help one another, in so doing, everyone benefits.

    Review:
Lars the Monkey Flies a WACO Airplane, is a simply told story with a great message. When he was little, Lars loved taking rides in WACO airplanes. He took his love and passion for flying, worked hard and became a pilot when he became older. This story will encourage children to follow their dreams. It also brings to light more information about the WACO Historical Society, which was founded in 1978. This society preserves the history of the WACO Aircraft. The museum is based in Troy, Ohio. The author, Meaghan Fisher, does a great job incorporating the WACO airplane into her book in such a fun way that children will find both the story and the character memorable.

This is more of a novel that could be read by children who are of middle school age and up. The feel of the story reminds this reviewer of days in the south where outhouses and the lack of modern day conviences were just as common in older homes. The people being content to live and work in the country with everyone knowing each other's names and  everyone's business.

Adults who have lived on the farm will remember the hard work they had to put in and the friends they made along the way. This story shows how towns and cities have grown and changed through the years, and though the pace of life has picked up, some people are just content to work hard and devote their lives on the farm. Readers will enjoy Mugs' adventures. The author does a great job bringing Mugs' story to life,  reminding all of us of our youth.

    Review:

Good Table Manners Made Easy is not an adventure story for children, but a book  of quick tips that will help them learn about table manners. Most children know the basics, like covering their mouths when they sneeze and not wearing a hat at the table, but it is surprising how many table manners even adults forget, like not texting or answering their phone at the table, and not swearing up a storm. These tips go as far as how to place your silverware on your plate when you leave the table and the use of the elusive napkin.

These days, more than ever, it seems that children are not being taught proper ettiquette. It should be a class added to the classroom in all schools. This book is  a great reminder for children and adults of what proper ettiquette is and how to have respect for others in a formal and informal table setting.

    Description:

“Arthur and Jennifer are two young Brits enjoying a Christmas holiday down in the ancient Cornish village of Mawgan Porth, a place just vibrant with associations of Arthur, the legendary monarch of Britain, or more precisely Logres, as the ancient realm was called. But the action begins seriously when they come across a mysterious, normally inaccessible, cave, where they discover an ancient medieval manuscript that has the ultimate literary quality of mysteriously drawing readers into the actual lives and adventures of its heroes and heroines.” (Professor Paul Piehler, a former student of C. S. Lewis, writes about The Magic Manuscript: Book One – Voyage to Eve Ilion.)

    Review:

The Magic Manuscript is a brilliant combination of medieval times and modern day heart.

This story leads the characters through a journey of self discovery through different periods of time. The plot is surrounded around a magical manuscript and an ancient sword. The story weaves from ancient times, to modern day, back to ancient times, seemlessly. The authors description of the world around the characters, and the characters themselves, is so memorable that readers will feel as if they were transported in time themselves, to view, if only for a short period time, the story through the character's eyes. Readers who love reading fantasy similar to the mystical style of J.R.R. Tolkein, but without the gruesome battles, will certainly love this 140 page historical version which brings to life the story of King Arthur, but in a very unique way. The author has used reincarnation to an interesting level that will keep the readers attention and have them wondering how often fate plays it's hand. Readers will certainly be yearning for the next book in the series, wanting to follow Arthur and Jennifer on their next amazing and mystical adventure.

  • Description:

Tom’s father is afraid of animals. The father learns through Tom's creativity and courage that he can conquer his fear.

    Review:

Tom is a talented boy who has a truly amazing gift--he can tame any kind of animal he wants to do tricks. He creates a trampoline for the snails in the garden, who love to jump on it. The squirrels in the trees are having fun on the trapezes Tom made for them as they swing by as if they were apart of a circus act flipping about.

The problem is that no matter how creative Tom is in the development of activities for his animal friends, his father refuses to come outside and look at any of his new inventions. Tom's father is afraid of animals, even butterflies, so he stays indoors where it's safe. But wanting to spend time with his father, Tom comes up with another idea. He brings the animals indoors to him in the lieu of furniture. But will his masterful plan help conquer his father's fear of animals, or only add to it? Good intentions sometimes don't work out as planned, or do they?

Tom the Tamer is a fun and imaginative adventure that will delight readers ages 4 and up, with it's interesting 32 page tale on  how to conquer a father's fear of animals. The author, Tjibbe Veldkamp, uses many different types of animals to accomplish Tom's goal from various climates and habitats, which young animal lovers will notice right away. This lends to the hilarity of the story, yet reinforces the fact that the story swims with fiction. The illustrator, Philip Hopman, has created charming illustrations that balance the text and fills it with life. Children of all ages will be able to live in Tom's imagination during the reading of the story and will relish in the outcome.

Review of Nowhere Hair by Sue Glader

Nowhere Hair: Explains cancer and chemo to your kids (children)

  • Hardcover: 32 pages
  • Publisher: Thousand Words Press; 1st edition (September 1, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0984359109
  • ISBN-13: 978-0984359103

  • Description:

The little girl in NOWHERE HAIR knows two things: Her mom's hair is not on her head anymore, so therefore it must be somewhere around the house. After searching the obvious places, the story reveals that her mother, although going through cancer treatment, is still silly, attentive, happy and yes, sometimes very tired and cranky. She learns that she didn't cause the cancer, can't catch it, and that Mommy still is very much up for the job of mothering. The book, written in rhyme, explains hats, scarves, wigs, going bald in public, and the idea of being nice to people who may look a little different than you. It ends with the idea that what is inside of us is far more important than how we look on the outside. For any parent or grandparent, NOWHERE HAIR offers a comfortable platform to explain something that is inherently very difficult.

    Bio:

I love words. I cuddle with them. I like them. A lot. (Which is always two words, and not one.)

I’ve been a copywriter since graduating from Stanford in 1988. But that’s not who I am.

I have one child, a son, which means I am a mother while also being a wife. But that is not who I am. When Hans was just 13-months old and I was only 33, I found a strange pea-sized lump under my left armpit that changed everything. That was 10 years ago now. I'm not a huge fan of the word“survivor,” because that is not who I am. I mean, I am surviving. I just don’t like the label.

I drive an old German convertible sportscar, because life is short. I am in a 12-step recovery program for chronic school volunteerism. I live in Marin County, California. While being one of the most spectacularly beautiful places on earth, Marin is also the breast cancer capital of America. So I've learned to take the bad with the good. Ask me any day. Life is good.

    Review:

An Amazing Children's Story That Softens The Topic of Cancer To A Child.

This story begins with a child who wonders where her mother's hair has gone. She looks in her purse, in the cookie jar, even under her mother's bed, but no hair. Then she thinks that her mother may have lent her hair to a matador, or a bird borrowed it for it's nest. Though the girl realizes that her mother is not as active as she once was, her mother's love for her never changes.

Their are many new things about her mother. One of the things she notices is the various hats and wigs her mother has to fit every mood. They help her attitude.

What gives this 32 page story life is the truth that just because we see someone with a bald head, or someone that looks different than ourselves, we should treat them for what they are on the inside and not what we see on the outside. A mother with cancer is no different than a mother without cancer to a child. A mother's love always stays the same, for though appearance may change, love is something that never will. This is a story highly recommended to aid the discussion of talking to a child about cancer.
