A review for The Imaginary Journeys of BJ and Dobbin

The Imaginary Journeys of BJ and Dobbin by Betty J. Riordan

The Imaginary Journeys of BJ and Dobbin is a collection of bedtime stories involving a little girl named BJ and her rocking horse, Dobbin. During those times when she is getting ready for bed, BJ imagines Dobbin trotting off with her, the pair taking an imaginary journey into history. The chapters are about people and places that made America what it is today. Each chapter ends the same: with BJ's mother tapping her shoulder to tell her to get off her rocking horse and go to bed. It is at that moment BJ realizes it was just an imaginary journey and yet her experience has taught her much. The stories bring to mind BJ being a much older child than what she actually is.

Have you ever imagined going back in time, meeting various kinds of people in history? It would make one wonder: How did they dress? What foods did they eat? What was their family life like? Who were their friends? The answers to some of those questions can be found in this story. Some of the people BJ learned more about are Christopher Columbus and other explorers, Sacagawea, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, Daniel Boone, Patsy Washington (George Washington’s wife), Abraham Lincoln, the Statue of Liberty, the Wright Brothers, and other notable personages.

This book brings up some great historical information that children of all ages will be able to learn from. It helps the reader become consumed in a specific moment in time and understand what it might have been like to live in that time period or to be involved in a certain situation. Furthermore, the narrative helps readers to understand better the adversities some of the people in our past had to endure, or the reasoning behind why some of them did what they did.

This collection of imaginary journeys brings up some great questions that children will be able to learn from that may help them write about specific historical figures when required by the school curriculum. It also might fire up a child’s imagination, inspiring him or her to ask other, more in-depth questions. Upper elementary-age children will benefit from this creative learning tool.

This month has been a wonderful ride of book signing and school events. Today I will be visiting Mt. Hope School in Lansing where I will be discussing my new Joe-Joe Nut Series for lower elementary and my Crypto-Capers Series for upper elementary. Hello to all of the students!

Berkley School District's Read in the Park Event

Book Beat and The Berkley Area PTSA Council are proud to present the Read in the Park on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Berkley High School in the Collaborative Center, 2325 Catalpa Drive, Berkley, MI 48072-1897. The Collaborative Center is on north side of the building, facing the courtyard and Catalpa. March is Reading Month and in celebration five Michigan authors and illustrators have been invited to speak and autograph books for children and families. The event is free and open to the public. Books by the participating authors will be available at the event, also we will be sending out an order form for people who cannot attend but would like to purchase books and get them signed. Your purchase of these author’s books at the event, through the book-order form or at the Book Beat is important because it makes these events possible. We thank you for your support in the salute to reading!

Review for Batty Malgoony's Mystic Carnivale

Batty Malgoony’s Mystic Carnivale

Batty Malgoony’s Mystic Carnivale is a magical drawing escapade that artists, young and old, are going to love. This is a true drawing book. Along with the beautifully brightly colored artwork covering every page, there are white spaces within the pictures for the reader to draw in and add their own special touches. The theme to this interesting drawing book is the carnival. Carnivals are legendary for their oddities and uniqueness, and what makes them different is what also seems to draw in the crowd. Things people have never seen before, and may never want to see again after they do.

Each page is filled with beautiful artwork of each event at Batty’s Carnivale and the interesting characters who work there, including Batty himself. The author introduces the reader to each area and explains a bit about it, guiding the reader to what needs to be done. What is fantastic are the spaces that he leaves for the reader to draw in. For some of the harder creatures or objects, he created an outline for the reader to follow to help them along and to inspire creativity.

This drawing book is for seven years old and up, definitely for the older children. There may be some drawings that younger children may not like and might find a little gruesome, though the drawings are cleanly done with no violence whatsoever. Even though both boys and girls could have fun with this book, the older boys who like the oddities and the gruesomeness of things, will love the chance to expand on it and be able to add and create really gross and disgusting things and characters.

K. Michael Crawford does a fabulous job with this book. He created a world that the reader can dive into, using their imaginations to propel them into another realm challenging their minds to go beyond the everyday and to really be creative. This drawing book is of course, fantasy, which allows the creation of several fantastical objects, characters, and things. The reader can just have fun. This would be a great book for children to take with them when they go on long trips or are in the car. It will keep their little hands and minds busy for hours.
