J.E. Rogers was born in the Bronx and raised in New Jersey. She graduated from Western Connecticut State University. Besides being an avid reader and writer, she also loves animals, and is especially intrigued by those found on the continent of Australia. Her compassion for endangered species led her to include them in her writing, where she hopes to spark a desire to read in middle graders, while teaching about the importance of protecting animals in the wild.

The Sword of Demelza is a conglomeration of australian endangered species and a riveting fantasy adventure. Children in the middle grades will love the adventure and suspense of this 336 page novel. With characters the reader can relate to, there is a bigger message the author imparts on all. One being the value of friendship.

The reader will become sucked into the story and will delight in the powerful ending. A wonderful story that will touch the hearts of many.

Review:

Angelo, The Unappreciated Ant is a meaningful story about a small ant named Angelo who feels unappreciated. His siblings are stronger and bigger than he is, and even though he is small, he can still do everything they can do. But his siblings don't feel the same way and don't believe in him. They feel that he holds them back and is slow in getting chores done interferring with their play time. Angelo feels very sad about how badly he is treated by his own family.

As the story progresses, Angelo receives a chance to prove himself in an unusual way. Will he be able to change his families mind and show them his true worth?  

 This is a simply told story that many children will be able to relate to and understand. The colorful illustrations enhance the telling of the story. Barbara does a fabulous job creating a connection with the reader as they can empathize with the character in some way or another. The message of the story is subtle, but powerful. Never judge a book by its cover, for its contents may just surprise you. This 28 page story is perfect for young children 5 years old and up.

No matter how much the mother tries to explain her ideas to her daughter, she refuses to see the vision she holds in her mind for the bed, and in so doing, might miss out on something very special.

The Treasure Bed teaches children to look beyond what they see and to dig deeper. A tarnished bed may appear ugly on the outside but with a little bit of work and some creativity, beauty can be found very easily. Many things are not what they seem, people and items can hide their true beauty, but for one that looks deep enough they will be rewarded. This story has a subtle message, but one that is very important to all readers. Young children will love the colorful illustrations while learning a valuable lesson.

The Great Gumshoe is a delighful mystery story for children of all ages. Written in the style of the 1930's the author does an amazing job bringing the story to life. Though the pages are filled with colorful illustrations, tones of the black and white film era are projected throughout. The feel of Humphrey Bogart will encompass the reader as they follow along with the detective as he uses his magnifying glass and wits to solve the case, helping a girl in need find her most valued possession in the most interesting of places.. The illustrations are brought to life by Christy Beckwith and the use of bright pastels. The colors are brillant as they leap off the page, yet darkened to give the reader the feel of the era. But why do they call him The Great Gumshoe? Readers must read the book to find out.

Pansy at the Palace is a delightful story told by a dog named Pansy who has spent most of her life in a shelter. Everyday the dog sees people coming in and out of the shelter but no one really pays much attention to her--until one day when a little girl comes and falls in love with her, taking her home with her. Avery, Pansy's new owner, is a girl with means who lives with her family inside of a hotel, but not just any hotel mind you, but the Palace Hotel in Beverly Hills.  

 

To say this hotel is designed for the well-to-do is an understatement, very similar to some of the hotels in Beverly Hills. It has it all for the filthy rich and their pets. Pansy meets the many people who work at the hotel. She finds them interesting and fun, certainly different than her humble beginnings. One day as Pansy follows a white silky cat named Desiree, she discovers something strange, a smelly fish odor. It won't be the only time she notices it either.

Soon, the calmness of the hotel is disrupted by a lady yelling in hysterics that her jewels have been stolen. With that news the hotel is now put into an uproar as concerned guests begin to leave the hotel fearing for the safety of their expensive items.

 

Pansy is more than happy to follow the clues, finding her self in a mystery Avery and her family hope can be solved before all of the guests of the hotel leave, and the hotels reputation is ruined. Can Pansy solve the mystery?

 

Pansy teaches the reader that no one is too small to make a difference. Pansy finds her inner strength and shows the world what she can do. The illustrator Kim Weissenborn does a wonderful job visiualizing the characters for this story. They fit well with the tone and text. Children will enjoy the mystery of the story in this 32 page picture book, as well as Pansy and her journey through the hotel as she settles into her new life, being rewarded with wonderful family and friends who love her for the wonderful dog that she is.
